Our media engagement rōpū, Māia, is hosting ‘Reporting on Mental Distress’, a professional development panel event for media experts. What New Zealanders see and hear in the media can influence public opinion and inform how we treat our colleagues, friends, whānau and neighbours with lived experience.

Open to members of New Zealand media only, attendees will join experts in mental health research, lived experience, mental health reporting and hauora. Professor Te Kani Kingi, Tui Taurua and Jehan Casinader will be hosted by Jase Te Patu for frank and insightful kōrero.

Discussion will include:

  • discrimination and stigma in reporting related to the experience of mental distress

  • what data and lived experience whānau tell us about the effects of stigma in reporting

  • newsroom challenges

  • and the opportunities for change
